I think it's' been established in the comments so far that a commercial VPN is neither useless nor infallible when it comes to privacy. Regarding choices of commercial VPNs, what hasn't' been discussed yet is that it's' important to consider the country the VPN is based out of, as this country will have specific laws regarding data retention for commercial entities. Laws regarding what they can and cannot retain, how long they can retain it, who and and under what circumstances they can release that data to, etc. For example the US doesn't' currently have any laws requiring mandatory data retention, so if a VPN from there advertises they don't' keep logs on users then it MAY be true going all tinfoil hat over Five" Eyes" doesn't' change the reality of encryption.
